Celebrating Black History Month
In honor of Black History Month, our students took part in a meaningful research project that celebrated influential Black figures who have shaped history, culture, and society. From trailblazing leaders and activists to artists, athletes, and innovators, students chose one individual from a curated list and explored their life and accomplishments. This project encouraged students to look closely at the impact these individuals made and why their contributions continue to matter today.
As part of the assignment, students created a short written description highlighting their chosen figure, what they are best known for, and why they are important. Students were encouraged to select someone they were genuinely interested in learning more about, which helped spark curiosity and ownership over their work. Through this process, students practiced essential research and writing skills, including identifying key facts, summarizing information in their own words, and presenting ideas clearly.
In addition to building academic skills, this project provided an opportunity for reflection and discussion about representation, perseverance, and leadership. Students learned that Black history is not limited to one month or one narrative, but is made up of many powerful stories that continue to influence our world today.
We are incredibly proud of the thought, effort, and creativity students demonstrated throughout this project. Their work reflects both a growing understanding of history and a deep respect for the individuals they studied. This Black History Month project was a meaningful way for students to honor the past while making connections to the present.
