Help Me Get Through My Day – Parent Workshop Series

  |   Aaron School, Elementary School, Lower School, Middle School, Special Programs

On Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015 Aaron School is excited to host “Help Me Get Through My Day! Calming Strategies to Help Families Relax” – A workshop with returning guest speaker Sheri Klugmann of Ramapo For Children. During this unique,  interactive workshop we will discuss some of the stressors often associated with raising children with special needs and learn about various strategies and relaxation techniques that are designed to relieve stress, empower yourselves and help all of your children experience a newfound sense of calm.

The workshop will be presented between 8:30 AM to 09:30 AM  in the main conference room at our Elementary & Middle School Campus on 45th Street and is open to all Aaron School parents K-12.

Sheri is no stranger to the Aaron School community. We have previously hosted her back in January, when she presented “Supporting Your Child with a Learning Disability” as part of our parents workshop series. At the core of that workshop was the understanding that challenging behaviors are the language through which children communicate when the demands of their environment are misaligned with their emotional, social or adaptive capacities. She facilitated a dynamic, highly interactive discussion during which our parents learned strategies for managing the challenging behaviors they are faced with at home.  Her practical, straightforward strategies involved using visuals, nonverbal cues, and simple, step by step instructions to support the child who demonstrates difficulties with attention, processing and comprehension, organization, self-confidence and motivation.  Sheri also shared techniques for improving overall communication and compliance at home by placing a special focus on providing a supportive, inclusive environment that inspires success.

A Queens College graduate, Sherry has earned both a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Hunter College and a master’s degree in Early Childhood and Special Education from Touro College. After working as a general and special education teacher in various public schools throughout New York City, Sheri joined the YAI full-time as a special education itinerant teacher, working as a 1:1 shadow for children with pervasive developmental disorders, Asperger syndrome, severe speech and language delays, social delays, and behavior challenges.

All interested in attending must RSVP ahead of time via email at tmurray@aaronschool.org. We look forward to seeing you there!
