Strategies for Promoting Positive Behavior
On October, 14th 2015 Aaron School’s Elementary and Middle School hosted “Strategies for Promoting Positive Behavior” – A presentation with special guest speaker, Kirsten Cullen Sharma, Psy.D. Clinical Assistant Professor, Co-Director, Early Childhood Clinical Service, Clinical Neuropsychologist at NYU Child Study Center | Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Dr. Cullen-Sharma’s presentation highlighted the following points:
The Basic Framework for Promoting Positive Behavior:
- Proactive Strategies
- Positive Reinforcement
- Problem Solving
The Approach (relative to all children):
- Set goals (relevant and prioritized,1-2 at a time)
- Provide warnings and cues for transitions
- Model expected behaviors
- Set clear expectations
- Use clear commands (positively stated whenever possible)
