Olive Room Explores the 5 Senses
In The Olive Room, we embarked on an exciting journey to explore the fascinating world of the five senses! Our vibrant classroom buzzed with enthusiasm as students engaged in a circle map activity, where they eagerly brainstormed and documented everything they knew about how we experience the world around us. They discovered that we see with our eyes, taste with our tongues, touch with our hands, smell with our noses, and hear with our ears. Each sense plays a vital role in our daily lives.
To deepen this understanding, teachers orchestrated a delightful hands-on, tactile activity that captivated the students’ imaginations. The lesson was designed to be as interactive as possible, incorporating an array of essential oils, a variety of foods, colorful sensory mats, and an engaging video.
We gathered in a circle, ready to take our senses on a delightful adventure. The first stop was a fragrant exploration of essential oils. Students took turns inhaling the soothing scent of lavender, which quickly emerged as the class favorite! They also experienced the invigorating aromas of peppermint and the warm, comforting scent of cinnamon.
Next, we shifted our focus to taste, an activity that certainly brought smiles and laughter! Students participated in a thrilling taste test, sampling a tangy lemon to experience something sour, savoring a crunchy pretzel for a salty kick, and indulging in the sweet delight of an M&M. As we shared our opinions, the pretzel claimed the title of class favorite, leaving everyone eager for more!
The adventure didn’t stop there. Our students had the opportunity to explore various animal mats, each one distinct in texture. They described their tactile experiences using words like fuzzy, bumpy, and smooth, sharing how each mat felt under their fingertips.
Lastly, we wrapped up our sensory journey by listening to a video filled with a symphony of animal sounds. Students used their ears to identify the animals making each sound, turning the lesson into a fun guessing game that reinforced the importance of auditory perception.
This engaging lesson was not only educational but also incredibly fun! By incorporating various modalities, we helped our students gain a deeper understanding of the five senses and how they shape our interactions with the world.
