New Year, New Goals at Aaron School
January marks a time for reflection and fresh beginnings. At Aaron 30th Street, students welcomed the new year by engaging in thoughtful activities that encouraged goal setting, self-awareness, and personal growth.
Across classrooms, students created vision boards to represent their goals, interests, and hopes for the year ahead. Using images, words, and symbols, students explored what motivates them and what they want to work toward in the coming months. This creative process supported important skills such as planning, organization, and expressive language, while also helping students make abstract goals more concrete and meaningful.
In related services classes, students focused on selecting a “word of the year.” Each student chose a word that reflected a value, mindset, or personal intention they want to carry with them throughout the year, such as hope, joy, overcome, or adventure. Students practiced explaining why they chose their word, strengthening self-reflection, expressive language, and social communication skills.
These activities encouraged students to take ownership of their learning and personal development. Rather than focusing on traditional resolutions, students learned to set realistic intentions, recognize their strengths, and identify areas where they want to grow. The vision boards and words of the year will continue to serve as reminders that students can revisit throughout the year during moments of reflection and goal setting.
As the year continues, these intentions will guide students as they learn, challenge themselves, and build confidence. January has been a meaningful reminder that growth looks different for every student, and that purposeful, reflective practices help lay the foundation for progress all year long.
